ABSTRACT: Acid hydrolysis of the rhizomes of Costus lacerus Gagn. yielded diosgenin in 1.7 percent. The 95% ethanolic extract of the rhizomes yielded -sitosterol- -D-glucoside, prosapogenin A, dioscin and graciIIin. Partial hydrolysis of graciIIin gave the new saponin, 3-0-[ -D-glucopyranosyI-(1 3)]-[ -D-glucopyranosyl] diosgenin.
