I2CHCOCHI2/PPh3: A highly efficient reagent for iodination of alcohols

ABSTRACT:     A new and versatile protocol for converting alcohols into alkyl iodides utilizing PPh3 /I2 CHCOCHI2 is established. Under mild and neutral conditions, this reagent produced higher product yields when compared to PPh3 /CI4 in the iodination of various alcohols. Competitive reactions with selected iodinating agents and CBr4 in 1H NMR studies showed that the reactivity of I2 CHCOCHI2 was greater than general I2 /imidazole and N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). Consequently, the PPh3 /I2 CHCOCHI2 condition provides one of the attractive alternatives for iodination.
